Truck Drivers Often Experience Musculoskeletal Pain: Iowa Attorney Discusses

According to Safety + Health magazine, out of 107 male truck drivers who were surveyed in two separate truck stops in Ontario, Canada, 57 percent reported discomfort or pain at some point in the last 30 days.

In particular, musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are seriously impacting truck drivers’ ability to work. A study published by reports that these disorders are responsible for nearly 50 percent of workplace illnesses and 25 percent of lost time claims.

Causes of musculoskeletal disorders among truck drivers

The good news is it doesn’t have to be this way. This study concluded that all of the contributing factors of MSD in truckers can be modified or prevented. In a press release published by Waterloo’s School of Public Health and Health Systems in Ontario last October, the school addressed some of these contributing factors. “Physical exposures such as awkward postures, repetition, lifting, whole body vibration and prolonged sitting, as well as personal factors such as physical fitness and job satisfaction, are known to be associated with the development of [musculoskeletal disorders],” said Philip Bigelow, a professor at the school.

Through simple modifications, the trucking industry can eliminate some of the more serious causes of MSD for truck drivers. If you are experiencing Musculoskeletal pain or disorders, contact your doctor. They can properly diagnose any injuries and prescribe a treatment regimen that is best for you.
