Which labor groups are most at risk?
NSC found that in recent years, the most injured employees from overexertion held government jobs, with those in the education and health services coming in a close second. Manufacturing, retail and transportation and warehouse workers had the next highest overexertion injuries. Construction workers had the least number of injuries due to overexertion, according to the study. In 2014, hospitals treated 3,132,271 cases of overexertion.
Overexertion injuries are often due to poor ergonomics and are most often caused by lifting too much, performing repetitive motions, sitting or standing for too long, working in temperature extremes, and working in awkward positions
To keep from working too hard and overexerting yourself, you should maintain a regular exercise routine that includes stretching and strength training. Other tips include:
- Plan a lift before you begin, keep your back straight and lift with your legs.
- Limit the amount of time you spend doing the same motion over and over.
- Take frequent breaks from any sustained position every 20-30 minutes.
- If you work at a desk, move frequently-used items close to you, use a footrest and adjust the height of your computer.
- Report pain, swelling, numbness, tingling, tenderness, clicking or loss of strength to your doctor before it becomes a full-blown injury.
